eNews Term 1 Issue 1

Dear Parents and Children,

I hope you are looking forward to the start of the new school year on Monday. Teachers and support staff have been busily preparing the classrooms and are looking forward to welcoming everyone back.

Teaching Staff

Our staff team has a settled look this year. We welcome:

Trudy McMillin – Lead Teacher Curriculum

Ada Niermeier – Lead Teacher of Music and Performing Arts

Winnie Wan, Phyllis Ng and Michelle Yeung who will be joining our team of Educational Assistants.

A full staff list can be found later in this newsletter and our Meet the Teacher events are planned for Thursday 23 August.

Refurbishment Programme

As usual, our team of contractors, architects and ESF Supervisors have chieved the near miraculous task of completing the school refurbishment programme within the 6 week period available.
Earlier this week, we completed the handover process for the newly refurbished Year 6 classrooms, Mandarin classrooms, Music classroom and Performing Arts Room. The new designs add a bright and airy feel to the school. The teachers are delighted with the new accommodation and we hope the children will be too.

School Shuttle Bus

The school shuttle bus service for SJS and STC students and which runs between the school campus and Fo Tan MTR station will continue in the new school year. The service will commence on Monday 13 August following the adjusted schedule printed below:

Morning runs (Fo Tan -> Campus)

  • 0725
  • 0740
  • 0800
  • (Last updated on 6 Aug 2018)

Afternoon runs (Campus -> Fo Tan)

  • 1430 (Wednesdays only)

Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

  • 1450
  • 1530
  • 1550

A bus escort will NOT be present on the shuttle bus. Consequently, it is required that primary aged children are accompanied by a responsible adult or an older sibling from Sha Tin College on the bus and the MTR (if this service is being used). Details of the accompanying adult will be requested when tickets are issued.

The fare will be HK$7.50/per head for each trip.

Access to the bus will be via a paper ticket which can be purchased at SJS Reception. School office opens from 8.00 am to 4.30 pm.

Traffic Around School

The provision of the shuttle bus service is, in part, an attempt to reduce the traffic flow around the school campus at morning drop off and afternoon pick up.

Before school

There is usually a queue travelling up Sui Wo Road from 7.50 am onwards on school mornings. The traffic flow is usually reasonably smooth and is helped by quick and efficient drop offs outside the school. PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE TURNING CIRCLE TO ESCORT YOUR CHILDREN INTO SCHOOL. This greatly impedes the traffic flow and causes delays.

After School

Please do not enter Lai Wo Lane while the buses are parked. Children will be using the road to access their buses.

Please do not carry out U-turns in the yellow box area at the road junction between Lai Wo and Sui Wo Road.

Please be aware of the no parking restrictions.

Please be aware of the large number of parents and children who cross Sui Wo Road at the two traffic refuges next to school. Please show courtesy and stop to allow the pedestrians to cross.

Finally, our team of security guards and Road Traffic Officers are there to assist in the safety of the pedestrians and in the flow of traffic – please follow their advice.

Please remember that parking at school is very limited. There is no parking at all during the school day. For after school events, our Security Team have been instructed to close the car park gates when the car park is full. I would ask you, if at all possible to make use of public transport when attending school events.

Best wishes,

Perry Tunesi

Sha Tin Junior School Calendar

As is always the case at the start of the year, we have a number of events planned for parents. You will be receiving separate invitations/notifications for each event, but to remind you of the programme, there are some of the events that are already in the diary. Subscribe to our School Calendar for the latest updates.

Sha Tin Junior School APP

Sha Tin Junior has its own app. The app contains shortcuts to all your favourite and most useful places. In the future there will also be a parent login so you can access all the information about your child at a glance. If you would like to download the app on Android or iOS, search for ESF Mobile VLE on the Play Store or iTunes Store. Once you have downloaded the app you can select Sha Tin Junior School. Download today!

We value your feedback. If you have any feedback regarding the app or what is missing then email James Haworth.

Dear Parents,

We are using Seesaw again this year.

Seesaw is an app which gives you a snapshot of what your child has been doing at school. Posts are shared regularly as either images or videos. When you receive a post, it’s a great way to generate conversation with your child about what they have been learning and what they feel proud about. Here is a video link about Seesaw if you haven’t used it before.

Positive comments (even the odd emoji) are always welcome. However, if you would like to discuss anything in particular with your child’s teachers, please email them directly. Teachers are not expected to reply via the Seesaw platform.

Current parents

You don’t need to do anything. You have been added automatically to your child’s new class. Sign in to the app as you did last year. You can also still access last year’s class in ‘achieved classes’ which can be found in the app.

New parents

You will be sent a link with instructions. The instructions will walk you through how you can sign up. You will have to wait to be approved by your child’s teacher. Then you can access to your child’s posts and you can start joining in with the learning conversation.

Current parents with new students in school

With a link:

  1. Follow the email link or type in the URL on the handout from your child’s teacher.
  2. Choose your child from the class list.
  3. On the signup screen, click the “Sign in” tab at the top instead of creating a new account.
  4. Sign in to your existing account and click the “Register for Updates” button.
  5. The teacher will need to approve your access. Once you have access, you can tap the Menu button to switch between journals.
