Dear Parents and Children,
It has been an exciting term at SJS and it is hard to believe we have only three more months left in the school year. It is good time to reflect on some recent achievements by the students as well as give a quick update on some of the developments at the school.
Shuttle Bus Service
The shuttle bus service has proved to be popular with all members of the SJS and STC communities. We made some initial changes to the timings of the buses and we will conduct another review after the holiday. We are hoping more staff and parents will make use of the shuttle to reduce the volume of traffic around the school in the morning and after school. The shuttle bus will continue to be free for the month of April. Charges may be introduced in May and June. We will review numbers and timing after Easter to maximize the benefit for parents and details of changes will be sent out at a later date.
Walk to School Wednesday
We had another successful Walk to School Wednesday. 114 children plus parents and teachers made the trip from Fo Tan station all the way up to SJS. It is a healthy way to start the day and for most students the walk took only around 45 minutes. The walk was also linked to our Hour of No Power. Students got involved in making sure we reduced our power usage as much as possible and because of their actions, we could see a drastic cut in our energy consumption. Our internal energy monitoring system reported an 82% reduction in energy use during the Hour of No Power.
PYP Evaluation Visit
SJS recently completed our 5-year PYP evaluation visit. External visitors came to the school to review various aspects of our school including our Programme of Inquiry and student understanding of inquiry. The visiting team was extremely impressed by the willingness of students to discuss their learning and the warm sense of community in the school. The review will help inform our planning for the next few years. The final report will be available in about three months and will be shared via the newsletter. A special thank you to all parents involved in the review.
Well done to the Y5 and Y6 tag rugby team. The team won the bowl competition at the recent ESF tournament. The team would like to thank Mr Chambers for all of his help and support with the team.
Congratulations to Thomas (6.5), captain Ethan (5.2), Matthew (6.3), and Jun (4.1) for being 2nd Runners-up in the HK Junior Inter-school Chess Competition. The team won an amazing five out of seven matches. A big thank you goes to Ethan’s mother for coordinating and supervising the team!
I wish everybody a very peaceful holiday and I look forward to seeing you back at school for the start of Term 3 on Monday, April 16th.
